Cycle Literacy Basics

Your body has been talking to you – what would change if you understood what it was saying?

Victoria holding a cardboard sign that reads: your hormones shift throughout the month - do you know how to support it?

What it is

Learning how to listen to your whole self.

Cycle literacy is learning your patterns – from symptoms and sleep to mood and energy – so you can better understand what’s happening in your body and support yourself through each phase.

Because knowing yourself isn’t just about knowing your thoughts.

It’s learning how to listen to your whole self & knowing how to advocate for yourself.

Fair question

“What’s that got to do with mental health?!”

I’m a therapist, not a doctor. Here’s why I care about cycle literacy.

I’ve worked with so many clients who were incredibly attuned to everyone else’s needs, but had no idea why they suddenly felt anxious, exhausted, overwhelmed, or short-tempered “for no reason.”

Sometimes, the missing piece was simply information about their own patterns.

They weren’t broken, and they weren’t failing. They were simply working without the full picture.

They were experiencing changes in their body that they had never been taught to notice, understand, or work with.

When we don’t know our patterns, hard days can feel like a personal failing instead of information. And “What’s wrong with me?” can turn into shame really fast.

My approach

That’s where my therapist brain comes in.

I teach cycle literacy through the lens I already use in my work: mental health, boundaries, self-trust, and self-awareness. We’re simply applying those same skills to your body.

This isn’t about letting your cycle run your life.

Learning your cycle is ultimately about deepening the relationship between you and you – in all your seasons.

It’s about understanding yourself well enough to ask

  1. What is my body telling me?
  2. What do I need?
  3. How can I work with myself instead of constantly working against myself?

Because your body isn’t an inconvenience you have to overcome. It’s information about you.

A quick note: This isn’t a substitute for therapy or medical care. It is education and tools to utilize to help you in your journey to learn you. Cycle literacy education is for informational and educational purposes only and is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. I’m a licensed therapist, not a medical provider, and these offerings are not a substitute for individualized care from your physician, OB-GYN, midwife, or other qualified healthcare professional.

Get curious about your own rhythms.

Cycle literacy sessions and workshops are a place to get curious about your own rhythms- with the same care, language, and nonjudgment I bring to the therapy room. Come as you are, questions and all.
